About half of HISD's schools had zero library checkouts this fall

About 130 HISD campuses had zero library checkouts in the first two months of school as library staffing continues to decline during the takeover.

About half of Houston ISD’s campuses have had zero library checkouts so far this school year, according to records obtained by the Houston Chronicle.

Since the takeover, state-appointed Superintendent Mike Miles has cut most library staff positions and turned many libraries into “team centers” where students can receive additional instruction. Records show at least three more library staffers were reassigned to new positions in September under the district’s latest round of campus cuts.

Almost all of the schools with zero checkouts have a higher share of low-income students than the district average. By contrast, nearly all of the district’s wealthiest schools still reported thousands of book checkouts this fall.
