String of bomb threats forces diversions, emergency landings and security sweeps
Airlines across Europe received a series of bomb threats on Thursday for the second time this week, forcing many to make unplanned landings or to be escorted by fighter jets.
Around 25 flights were affected within a few hours on Thursday, with some diverted.
While no country has attributed culpability for the threats, they come at a time when European officials have been blaming Russia and Iran for what they describe as “hybrid attacks” and acts of sabotage. Moscow and Tehran deny any such campaign. Denmark, Poland and Romania, all affected by Thursday's disruptions, have previously accused Moscow directly, while Germany blamed Russia for an attack on Leipzig airport in August. Britain has blamed Russia in the past but linked Iran to a suspected plot to attack a US air base. Both Russia and Iran deny any involvement.
