This city in Japan receives nearly 7 metres of snowfall annually, making it one of the snowiest urban destinations in the world
While Yakutsk in Russia’s Siberian region is widely known as one of the coldest cities in the world, it is not the place that receives the highest snowfall. That distinction belongs to Aomori, a city in northern Japan that experiences extraordinary amounts of snow every winter. According to local reports, the city can receive between six and seven metres of snowfall annually, earning it recognition as one of the snowiest cities in the world. (Image: AI)
Located on the northern tip of Japan’s Honshu Island, Aomori is the capital of Aomori Prefecture. The region experiences exceptionally heavy snowfall during winter, with snow often covering the city for several months. However, what makes Aomori particularly remarkable is how residents continue their daily routines despite the challenging weather conditions. (Image: Pixabay)
The city’s geographical location plays a significant role in its unusually high snowfall. Cold winds originating in Siberia travel across the Sea of Japan before reaching the region. As these freezing winds pass over the relatively warmer sea, they absorb moisture and develop into snow-bearing clouds. When the moisture-laden air reaches the mountainous terrain around Aomori, it rises, cools and produces heavy snowfall. This weather phenomenon is associated with orographic snowfall and is also commonly linked to the sea-effect snow process. (Image: Pixabay)
