A North Carolina appeals court has given new life to a major legal fight over storm damage repair payments. The court has brought back dozens of breach of contract lawsuits filed by a local roofing company against several major insurance providers. The North Carolina Court of Appeals ruled on 4 November 2026 to overturn earlier decisions that had dismissed the claims brought by Piedmont Roofing Services. According to court records and reports from Insurance Business, the roofing company had repaired dozens of homes damaged by storms after homeowners transferred their insurance policy rights to the business. When several major insurance companies refused to pay the full amounts for the completed repairs, the company filed a series of lawsuits in Mecklenburg County. The appeals court's decision brings back an important legal fight over the transfer of insurance claims after property damage and the rights of repair contractors across North Carolina.

Piedmont Roofing Services filed 42 separate lawsuits against a group of major property insurers, including State Farm, Allstate, Nationwide, Travelers, and USAA. Forty-one of these cases were combined and sent to the North Carolina Court of Appeals after a trial judge in Mecklenburg County dismissed all the lawsuits.
