The famous chat show host's journey from an English mining town to Australian screens and back is detailed in a documentary now screening at the British Film Festival.

When the late, great chat show host Michael Parkinson's beloved father died, his grief led him to Australia.

Local audiences embraced him, and Parkinson aired in Australia on the ABC from 1979 to 1982.

Mike, the second of Michael's three sons, said his dad "felt safe in Australia".
