Banh Mi a Mui brings back the $8 banh mi from now-closed Sing Sing

The owners of Sing Sing, the Tenderloin banh mi shop that closed earlier this year, are back with Banh Mi a Mui and still selling sandwiches for just $8.

Each week, we share some favorite recent bites, the dishes and snacks and baked goods that didn’t find their way into a full review. Want the list a few days earlier? Sign up for our free newsletter, Bite Curious.

Sing Sing, a bánh mì shop in the Tenderloin that was a favorite among Chronicle food writers, closed earlier this year after a crackdown by the city attorney’s office on gambling and drug activity in convenience stores. The owners of Sing Sing — who, it should be noted, were not accused of criminal activity — have opened a new restaurant, Banh Mi a Mui, in Laurel Heights, spiritually a far cry from the Tenderloin. But the house combination bánh mì ($8!) is, as far as I can tell, the same, with layers of headcheese, steamed pork sausage and pâté. There’s skillful restraint here, both with the fillings and the mayo. If an $8 bánh mì isn’t deal enough, there’s an opening special: Buy five sandwiches, get one free.

Banh Mi a Mui. 3401 Geary Blvd., San Francisco.
