Astros' new GM Randy Flores talks about Mexican-American background
Houston Chronicle · Matt Young ·
The Houston Astros' Randy Flores is just the fifth Latino general manager in the history of Major League Baseball and second for the franchise.
When Randy Flores was asked to answer a question in Spanish at his introductory press conference Monday, he deferred to his father Ron, who was sitting in the front row alongside his wife as well as Flores' wife and three children.
As his father cautiously rose from his chair in preparation to handle any Spanish-language questions for his son, the new Houston Astros general manager laughed, “I’m kidding, pop,” before telling the assembled media, “My dad is a pastor. He’s used to preaching, so he needs to sit down, otherwise you guys will hear a sermon.”
Flores, who was hired by the Astros on Friday, is just the fifth Latino general manager in the history of Major League Baseball and the first since Cuban-American Al Avila was fired by the Detroit Tigers in 2022.
