Map Shows Democratic Governors' Dramatic Surge Amid GOP Wipeout
Newsweek · Dan Gooding ·
If the results hold, about 53% of Americans will live where Democrats control the governor's office and both chambers—a trifecta.
Democratic governors are poised to lead states that hold roughly three-quarters of the United States' population after a sweeping series of victories that have dramatically reshaped the nation's political map.
Democrats entered the 2026 midterm elections controlling 24 of the 50 governorships, compared with 26 Republicans. They have since flipped GOP-held governor's mansions in Georgia, Iowa, Nevada, Ohio, and Texas, while Republicans have so far failed to capture a Democratic-held governorship.
