Why is Charter Communications stock sliding today?

Investing.com -- Charter Communications stock fell 6.6% in pre-open trading after the company released third-quarter 2026 results before the opening bell, revealing a net loss of $20.50 per share — a result that dramatically missed analyst consensus expectations of roughly $9.54 — driven primarily by a $6.3 billion non-cash franchise impairment charge tied to reduced estimates for future customer and revenue growth, as well as higher replacement costs for certain network components.

The impairment was not the only concern weighing on investors. Charter’s broadband business continued to erode, with the company shedding 233,000 internet customers on a pro forma basis in the quarter, a worsening trend compared to the 171,000 lost in the same period a year earlier.

Free cash flow also fell sharply year over year, and the operating margin swung deeply negative. To address these structural pressures, management unveiled a new operating model targeting $2 billion in annualized expense savings over 18 months, in addition to anticipated synergies from the Cox integration.
