Dhanteras is widely associated with buying gold, silver and new utensils, but the festival also has a lesser-known tradition called Yamadeepdaan or Yama Deepam. The ritual is traditionally performed to seek protection from untimely death and pray for the health, safety and longevity of family members. (Image: Pexels)

Here are some traditional steps devotees can follow while performing the ritual. Choose a large earthen lamp, traditionally a four-wick diya (chaumukhi diya).
