Lee Nominates Ahn Deok-su as National Tax Service Commissioner Stock market tax probe expert appointed as National Tax Service Commissioner

President Lee Jae Myung nominated Ahn Deok-su, head of the Seoul Regional Tax Office, as the new National Tax Service Commissioner on the 6th. The National Tax Service Commissioner is a vice-ministerial level political appointee who is appointed after a parliamentary confirmation hearing. No parliamentary vote is required for the appointment. Ahn, who served as head of the National Tax Service’s Investigation Bureau since the launch of the Lee Jae Myung government, is evaluated as an investigation expert who led tax probes related to unfair practices in the stock market.

Born in 1971, Ahn graduated from Busan Yongin High School and Korea University before joining the NTS after passing the 40th Higher Civil Service Examination. He worked at the Gumi, Gyeongsan and Nam Incheon tax offices before being seconded to the Office for Government Policy Coordination. He subsequently served in the Investigation Division 3 of the Seoul Regional Tax Office, the NTS Tax Collection Division and the Investigation Management Division of the Seoul Regional Tax Office’s Investigation Division 2, before becoming head of the Gumi Tax Office.

Ahn subsequently served as head of the Busan Regional Tax Office’s Investigation Bureau 1, head of the Jungbu Regional Tax Office’s Investigation Bureau 1, and head of the Seoul Regional Tax Office’s Investigation Bureau 4, primarily handling investigation tasks. After the current government’s inauguration, he worked alongside then-National Tax Service Commissioner Lim Kwang-hyun as head of the National Tax Service’s Investigation Bureau. Aligning with the government’s policy direction, he led tax investigations targeting stock market unfair tax evaders, tax evaders undermining public livelihoods by causing price instability, and individuals suspected of private use of corporate-owned supercars. In July, he became head of the Seoul Regional Tax Office, the largest regional office nationwide.
