S.F. Zoo brings back night holiday lights after an eight-year break
San Francisco Chronicle · Sam Whiting ·
After an eight-year break, the S.F. Zoo’s holiday light show returns Friday with more than 1 million lights, 14 themed zones and a $30 adult ticket.
After its gates close to visitors and the sun sets, San Francisco Zoo is one of the darkest places in the city — surrounded by trees, usually shrouded by fog, and without streetlights or car lights. But on Wednesday evening, after a countdown by 200 staffers, docents and VIPs, the Entry Village was suddenly illuminated, as warm and glowing as a Christmas village.
That was the effect zoo CEO Cassandra Costello was after for the launch of ZooLights, a seasonal attraction returning to San Francisco for the first time since 2018. It opens to the public Friday at dusk and will keep most of the zoo open at night through Jan. 3.
“The effect will be magical,” promised Costello at Wednesday night’s media preview. “Overall, ZooLights will have more than 1 million lights, and the walk-through areas include amazing photo ops, and nods to the city of San Francisco with a Golden Gate Bridge and the iconic cable car.”
