OUTGOING Governor Gavin Newsom said he will move to commute the sentence of over 500 inmates on death row to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
Newsom, who is scheduled to leave office in January 2027, said he made the decision because of his moral objection to the death penalty.
“This decision is among the most difficult of my career, not because I doubt its necessity for our state but because I know its announcement may surface excruciating memories for victims’ families,” Newsom wrote in a letter to Californians on Thursday.
