Extreme Networks jumps 15% on report company is exploring a sale

Investing.com -- Extreme Networks Inc (NASDAQ:EXTR) shares surged 15.3% in Friday morning trading after Reuters reported that the networking equipment and cloud software provider is exploring a potential sale after drawing inbound acquisition interest. The Morrisville, North Carolina-based company, which commands a market capitalization of roughly $3 billion, is working alongside an investment bank to evaluate strategic options, according to the report, which cited people familiar with the matter.

The takeover interest comes as enterprise demand shifts rapidly toward cloud-managed infrastructure and automated network operations. Potential strategic suitors evaluating an approach could include cybersecurity vendor Fortinet, industry incumbent Cisco Systems, and data infrastructure firm NetApp, the sources noted, though Extreme Networks and NetApp declined to comment to Reuters. Cisco and Fortinet did not immediately respond.

Founded in 1996 as an Ethernet switch specialist, Extreme has spent recent years repositioning its business around cloud architecture and artificial intelligence-driven network management tools. That software transformation appears to have enhanced the company’s strategic appeal as larger tech conglomerates actively seek enterprise fabric assets and automated troubleshooting capabilities.
