Eliza's restaurant in San Francisco will reopen after fire damage

Eliza's restaurant in San Francisco, a popular Chinese spot since 1988, will reopen after damage from a devastating church fire next door.

In June, a devastating fire in a church next door temporarily shuttered Eliza’s, a decades-old Chinese restaurant that former Chronicle restaurant critic Michael Bauer once named among San Francisco’s best. As it sat dark for months, longtime fans of its Peking duck and unique glass decor feared it might not return.

Happily, though, its owners plan to reopen in early November after extensive repairs.

“We had to replace everything. It’s all brand-new now,” said Jan Sung, who ran the restaurant at 2877 California St. with her chef-husband, Ping, before the pair officially retired about a decade ago; they live in an apartment upstairs while Jan Sung’s sisters operate the restaurant below. Eliza’s has been in the space since 1999, after relocating from a Civic Center location that opened in 1988.
