South Korean Military Fails to Secure GOP Intruder Special Forces Model Walking Drills Spark Discipline Criticism

It was revealed on the 6th that South Korean military forces arbitrarily terminated a search operation without securing a suspect after detecting a civilian intrusion in a frontline General Outpost (GOP) area. The details emerged during a report to the National Assembly Defense Committee by security authorities the previous day, nearly two weeks after the incident. Opposition parties criticized, “The discipline of our military has been completely shattered.”

People Power Party lawmaker Sung Il-jong, a member of the National Assembly Defense Committee, stated at a press conference, “This shocking incident demonstrates how much South Korea’s security has collapsed under the Lee Jae Myung government. Immediate accountability should be demanded from the corps commander to all relevant commanding officers.”

The ‘GOP fence damage incident’ occurred on the 24th of last month in Cheorwon, Gangwon Province, when a woman in her 30s crossed the Civilian Control Line (CCL) and approached the GOP fence. The military detected her movement at the time but failed to secure the suspect. The woman proceeded to cut multiple sections of the surveillance ‘light fence (barbed wire sensor)’ installed on the fence the following day. The military only secured the civilian suspect after approximately 20 hours, or one night and two days.
