A Banksy exhibit is coming to Union Square while a former Saks store is getting a colorful new mural
Two high-profile Union Square retail vacancies are getting creative makeovers: A 25,000-square-foot exhibition of work attributed to the guerrilla artist Banksy is coming to the former H&M space at 150 Powell St., while the owner of the former Saks Fifth Avenue space has added a mural that brings a splash of color to its shuttered facade.
“Banksy Limitless” is scheduled to open Dec. 4 and run through the spring with a collection of 250 works, including large-scale installations, pieces the exhibit’s website describes as certified originals and murals it says were removed from their original street or building “canvasses.” The Chronicle reached out to the organizers for comment but did not hear back.
Banksy built a reputation with anonymous, stencil-based street art that addresses political and social issues with satire and dark humor. He has also become an art-market spectacle: In 2018, a hidden shredder partially destroyed one of his paintings moments after it sold for $1.4 million.
