Hong Kong authorities arrest 28 in crackdown on bid-rigging after Tai Po fire

Raid follows security chief Chris Tang’s vow for tougher action against bid-rigging amid revelations from a committee’s report on the blaze.

Hong Kong authorities have cracked down on a bid-rigging syndicate and arrested 28 people, including directors of contractors and consultancy firms as well as some with triad backgrounds, in the first operation by a joint task force after the devastating Wang Fuk Court fire.

Secretary for Security Chris Tang Ping-keung said on Friday that the task force, formed to combat bid-rigging, had also set up a 24-hour hotline for the public to report any suspected bid-rigging activities and would offer monetary rewards in appropriate circumstances.

The arrests are the first since a damning report on the deadly Tai Po blaze by an independent committee was released last week.
