The extraordinary tale of the two men who shared a heart and a wife

After Sonny Graham’s life was saved by a heart transplant, he went on to marry his donor’s widow – but the story doesn’t end there

In 2023, Tiffany Conschafsky shared a social media post about her late father, Terry Cottle. The caption read: “This is my dad. He died by suicide and, as an organ donor, he donated his heart. He was married to this woman, and he gave his heart to this man. The donor recipient wrote a letter to my dad’s widow, thanking her for my father’s heart. They met up and he said he felt an instant connection between them. He eventually married her. So now this man shares the same heart and wife as my father. Thirteen years after receiving my dad’s heart, he also died by suicide.”

Tiffany’s post was viewed 6.6 million times, and ignited interest in the remarkable story of her father and his organ recipient, who had shared both a heart and a wife. “It really blew people away,” says Tiffany. “They wanted to know more about it because it is just so crazy, the odds and the coincidences.” It is now the subject of a new podcast series, Heart, which revisits what happened to these men, whose lives are linked beyond the grave.

The recipient in the story is Sonny Graham. He was saved from heart failure at the age of 57 thanks to a heart transplant from Terry, who was just 33 when he died by suicide in 1995. After his successful surgery, Sonny contacted Terry’s widow, Cheryl, to thank her for his new chance at life.
