Like thousands of others, I climbed aboard Sydney’s new Metro extension this morning. The excitement was palpable after two painful years of lurching pink buses (chronicled in excruciating detail by CBD’s John Buckley). Commuters took selfies and collected I Love Metro badges on platforms they haven’t seen since September 30, 2024, when the old T3 line closed. I barely had time to pin on a badge, however, because the metro pulled into the station within minutes. The old quarter-hour wait for the service to the city has been consigned to history.
My trip was during peak hour, but the Herald’s transport and infrastructure editor Matt O’Sullivan rode on the very first service at 4.31am. Matt is too modest to admit it, but he’s quite the rock star in the mass transit field. Some of the trainspotters who gathered for the first service this morning were almost as excited to spot him. He’s attended a few such events in his 17-odd years reporting on transport and aviation for the Herald, including the launch of the Metro city section in August 2024, and said today’s event was even more exuberant.
