His defeat is among five Democratic pickups so far in the Tar Heel State

North Carolina Rep. Richard Hudson, the chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee, has lost his race for reelection, a stinging defeat for the man charged with preserving the House majority for the GOP.

Hudson fell to Democrat Richard Ojeda, a former West Virginia state senator who was leading 51 percent to 49 percent Thursday afternoon when The Associated Press called the race in North Carolina’s 9th District.
