Mets Reject Murphy, Brewers Win Title Late-blooming manager leads Milwaukee to World Series victory after New York passes him over for scandal-plagued Beltrán

[OSEN=Lee Sang-hak, a correspondent] Pat Murphy (67), the manager who led the Milwaukee Brewers to their first World Series championship, became a Major League manager at the late age of 65. Leading his team to a World Series victory at 67, he is a classic example of a late-blooming leader.

He had an earlier opportunity to become a manager. After the 2019 season, the New York Mets, in their search for a new manager, placed Murphy, then a Milwaukee bench coach, on their final shortlist. They interviewed him three times, but the Mets ultimately chose Carlos Beltrán.

Murphy was disappointed after missing the opportunity. On November 4 (Korean time), Murphy appeared on the podcast *The Show*, hosted by New York Post journalists Joel Sherman and Jon Heyman, and recalled seven years ago, “The Mets’ interview process was excellent. They showed game footage, paused it, and provided cards detailing who was warming up in the bullpen, their recent appearances, score differentials, and situational information. They asked me to consider and explain how I would handle five or six scenarios. I had to immediately answer questions like whether Robinson Canó, who was hitless in 24 at-bats, should continue batting third.”
