Funding announced less than three weeks after training incident killed four Canadian Armed Forces members
The federal government is proposing $28-million over two years to support members of the Canadian Armed Forces, families and communities affected by the October incident at CFB Wainwright.
The funding, contained in Thursday’s federal budget, is being announced less than three weeks after a fire-related training incident on Oct. 17 killed four members of the CAF – Sergeant Morgan Wong, Private Shaun Farrell, Private Aidan Goulding and Private Hayden Lykkemark. The incident also injured 39 personnel at the military base, located in central Alberta.
At a press conference inside the budget lockup in Ottawa, Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne told reporters the funding was “just the right thing to do” for CAF personnel and families. “I wanted to send a signal that we’re there for them,” he said.
