PORT O’CONNOR — Dan Walker met me at the gate off FM 1289 before dawn. Night still enveloped the Powderhorn Wildlife Management Area, its splendor concealed under a veil of darkness.

When I climbed inside Walker’s truck for a safari-style tour, the first streaks of light began to reveal the WMA.
