El Cerrito High’s football program and coach were suspended as police investigate hazing allegations involving 22 athletes.

The West Contra Costa Unified School District said Thursday that El Cerrito’s High School football program and the football team’s head coach had been suspended following a police investigation into allegations of hazing involving at least 22 athletes.

School district officials said the ongoing probe was reviewing incidents that allegedly occurred between September 2024 and October 2026. The police investigation was launched in early October after a mandated reporter alleged members of the football team were engaged in bullying and hazing, police said. Through their investigation, which included interviews with victim, witnesses and school staff — and video evidence — detectives identified 22 current and former student athletes who could face arrest.

An independent third party that was not immediately named was also conducting a Title IX investigation into the allegations, which, according to El Cerrito police, included instances of battery, sexual battery, assault, conspiracy, stalking, false imprisonment and dissuading a victim from coming forward.
