Lim Yun-chan Recreates 2022 Victory Encore in Korea Pianist and Conductor Marin Alsop Reprise Rachmaninoff Finale Four Times, Honoring Van Cliburn Triumph

The Philadelphia Orchestra (conducted by Marin Al-sop)’s performance in South Korea held at the Art Center Incheon on November 5. The first half featured pianist Lim Yun-chan (22 years old) performing Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3, which concluded with a stormy finale followed by the composer’s signature four-note motif. The audience erupted in thunderous applause, with waves of standing ovations.

This stage had drawn early attention as a reunion between the conductor and soloist from the Van Cliburn Competition finals in 2022. The performance had already surpassed 20 million views on YouTube and was familiar through a live recording released by the British label Decca.

The true twist came after the concerto. Typically, the soloist performs a short solo piece as an encore. However, conventions did not apply to the 22-year-old prodigy. Amid unending applause, Lim Yun-chan and Al-sop returned to the stage four times. They headed to the piano and conductor’s podium together, reprising the final third movement of Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3 as an encore.
