Bay Area bike trail is full of surprises — and a BART ride away

The Lamorinda Trail Loop launches and ends at BART stations; travels on wide bike lanes and passes sweet birdhouses, lunch stops and destination chickens.
I’m riding my bicycle on a secluded trail near Lafayette when the first tiny birdhouse appears to my left.
As I photograph it obsessively from every angle — a fairy-sized Tudor treasure that looks like it has a library and warm fire inside — my guide Jeff Johnson politely points toward boughs of trees in the distance, covered by dozens more little avian condos.
“It gets a lot better!” he says.
