CAMBRIDGE — In their admirably tough-minded “The Getaway Driver,” Deborah Salem Smith and Charlie Thurston opted not for the facile approach of “telling both sides of the story” but rather of telling the story, period.

It’s a fine-grained but important distinction that adds significantly not just to the dramatic impact but the moral weight of “The Getaway Driver,” a compelling new work that’s now at Central Square Theater under the direction of Curt Columbus.

Its binary two-voice structure notwithstanding, “The Getaway Driver” never let us forget whom the drama’s central tragedy hit hardest. Without making direct parallels to the toxic polarization of today’s political environment — without needing to — the play also summons the chaos and fury of a nation at war with a foreign country and with itself more than half a century ago.
