The State Department called recent reports of Secretary of State Marco Rubio mulling an exit from the Trump administration following the Democratic Party’s victories in the midterm elections a “baseless hoax.”

Reports surfaced Thursday from outlets such as the Independent and Bloomberg that said Rubio was weighing on leaving the Trump administration as he allegedly prepares a 2028 presidential run.

“This is complete and total fake news based on the word of anonymous sources, befitting a tabloid,” Dylan Johnson, assistant secretary of State for global public affairs, told The Hill. “The Secretary has not discussed leaving his role and he will continue to proudly serve in President Trump’s administration long after this fake news is revealed as yet another baseless hoax.”
