‘Club Kid’ Review: A Playboy’s Surprise Son

The Wall Street Journal · Kyle Smith ·

Jordan Firstman stars in and directs this predictable dramedy about a gay club promoter who finds out he is the father of a 10-year-old boy.

“Club Kid” is an indie comedy-drama about a self-involved, degenerate playboy who unexpectedly finds himself being saddled with a son. Events are doubly unexpected, in this case, because the guy in question is gay and doesn’t remember ever even having sex with a woman. (He half-heartedly did, during a drug-occluded night of partying.)

The film is a feature directorial debut from its star and writer, Jordan Firstman (FX’s “English Teacher”). Mr. Firstman plays Peter, a downtown New York club promoter and regular drug user who lives in a whirl of colorful gay and trans friends who place hedonism high on their list of life pursuits. His business partner, Sophie (Cara Delevingne), is forever urging him to get his act together, but when your profession is “club promoter,” being wild is sort of the job.
