Why is Firefly Aerospace stock surging today?
Investing.com -- Firefly Aerospace stock surged 15.7% in pre-open trading after the Cedar Park, Texas-based space and defense company disclosed a multi-billion-dollar commercial agreement with satellite broadband firm AST SpaceMobile, covering the delivery of 36 rocket engines, a license to the underlying intellectual property, and engineering support over a three-year period — a package valued at more than $1.3 billion. The engines, comprising 27 Miranda units and nine vacuum-variant Vira engines, are destined for AST SpaceMobile’s first three heavy-lift "Blacklift" rockets, designed to deploy BlueBird satellites into low Earth orbit. Firefly retains full ownership of its engine intellectual property and will continue serving its existing government and commercial launch customers.
The deal’s financial structure — a combination of cash and AST SpaceMobile Class A common stock subject to lock-up periods — gives Firefly immediate capital to expand hiring, procure long-lead materials, and build out additional test bays in Briggs, Texas, accelerating its own launch vehicle production roadmap. The announcement carries added weight given that the stock had just set a new 52-week low the prior session, with analysts at B.Riley having recently trimmed their price target to $40 from $50 while maintaining a Buy rating, and InvestingPro’s Fair Value estimate sitting at $23.45 — well above where shares were trading. Management is expected to elaborate on the deal’s financial implications during the Q3 2026 earnings call scheduled for November 10.
The broader market backdrop is turbulent but stabilizing. The prior session saw the Nasdaq Composite plunge 5.5% and the S&P 500 drop 4.4% — the worst single-day losses since April 2025 — as Democratic election victories stoked fears of tighter AI regulation and a slowdown in data center investment. In pre-market today, however, Nasdaq futures are rebounding, with the Nasdaq up 1.7% and the S&P 500 gaining 0.3%, even as the Dow remains under pressure, down 0.8%. Investors are also watching the October U.S. jobs report due today for additional macro direction.
