Cy-Fair ISD bond and tax increase rejected

Houston Chronicle · Elizabeth Sander ·

Cy-Fair ISD voters rejected a $1.6 billion bond and tax increase, leaving an $80 million deficit and staff without promised stipends.

Voters in Cy-Fair ISD shot down the district's proposed $1.6 billion bond and first ever tax rate increase referendum, election results show. None of the measures in Texas' third-largest district received more than 36% support from voters, with double-digit failure margins.

“We accept our voters’ decisions. Our next step is to listen carefully, reassess our options and keep our community involved as we determine a path forward," Superintendent Doug Killian said in a release Wednesday morning. He thanked voters for taking the time to head to the polls and share their opinions.

The failure leaves Cy-Fair ISD in a lurch with an $80 million budget deficit for this school year. Killian said previously that if the district couldn't get more revenue, they would have to start making cuts to staff or programs, but it's not clear yet how the district will go about that process, or if they will even follow through with cuts.
