In her first term, Democratic Gov. Katie Hobbs had vetoed more than 540 measures passed by the Republican-led Legislature on policies including taxes, immigration and voting laws.
Democrats have won control of both legislative chambers in Arizona and retained the governor’s office, giving the party its first trifecta in the state since 1966. This marks a significant Democratic victory in Tuesday’s midterm elections, which saw the biggest gains in state legislatures for either party since the nationwide wave of Republican victories in 2010. Democrats will now have a trifecta in Arizona, Michigan, Minnesota, Nevada, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. The parties had previously shared power in all six states. Democrats also won control of legislative chambers in Texas, Maine, New Hampshire and North Carolina.
