Fatma Betul Sayan Kaya, a former deputy chair of President Erdogan's party, was arrested in a major funds scandal. The opposition claims Sayan Kaya and her husband cashed in shares worth millions in the illegal scheme.
Authorities in Turkey have arrested a former minister and deputy chair of President Erdogan’s ruling party. Fatma Betul Sayan Kaya faces charges related to a share-price manipulation scandal involving several investment funds. She resigned in September after allegations surfaced that she sold shares worth millions before regulators liquidated the funds. Kaya, who served as family and social affairs minister, was taken into custody Thursday. Her husband has been released but must report to police. Turkey’s main opposition party accuses Kaya of receiving $43 million from a $3 million investment. The couple deny wrongdoing but have transferred some profits to a designated account.
