What is Diwali, the Festival of Lights, and how is it celebrated?
Associated Press ·
Diwali, India’s most important festival, is celebrated by more than a billion people, including Hindus, Sikhs, Jains and Buddhists. The five-day festival brings gatherings, fireworks, feasts and prayers. Its name comes from the Sanskrit word Deepavali, meaning “a row of lights,” and it symbolizes the victory of light over darkness. The date follows the Hindu lunar calendar, usually falling in late October or early November. Traditions vary by region but often include lighting lamps, setting off firecrackers and exchanging sweets. In North America, celebrations include parades and cultural events. This year, Disney World in Florida held its first Diwali parade.
